Bible Study Supplies

One of the most common questions I get is “what [insert supply here] are you using?” I use a few different things regularly and have a lot of Bible study supplies that I really like. I will go over them below but I think it’s important to start with a couple things.

First, the only things you NEED to study the Bible are a Bible and a writing utensil. That’s it.

Second, supplies are totally up to your own preferences. Nearly all Bible pages are incredibly thin so every pen or highlighter will leave some sort of indentation or shadowing on the other side. Some pens do work better than others, though, so it just depends on how much it bothers you.

Last, it doesn’t matter what you use, in the grand scheme of things, because the goal is to study the word of God. Multicolored pages and tons of organized notes doesn’t make a Bible study better.

All that being said, let’s get into some of my favorite supplies and what I’ve been using!

My Bible

I am currently using a Holman CSB Notetaking Bible. I’ve been using this Bible basically all year and I love it. I love the CSB translation SO much! I also use a Wide Margin ESV Reference Bible from time to time. I was using this a lot but I found I struggled to write in the inner margins more often than not. I got it from a small shop- @redeemedbooks on Instagram – but you can also find it here on Amazon.

My pens

I honestly use a few different pens, but lately I have been using these Pigma Micron pens. I usually use the 01 size for writing in my Bible and the 03/05 for notes. They’re one of my top choices because they don’t bleed, the ghosting is minimal, and they don’t leave an indention in the page. I’ve used the Micron PN pen, but found the nib wore down very quickly.

Other pens I’ve used in the past and like are some generic Bic pens and the Zebra BP F 301 ballpoint pens.

Lettering Pens

Literally the only pens I use for any lettering I do are the Tombow Fudenosuke pens. I’ve been using these for at least 4 years and haven’t found any I like nearly as much.

My highlighters

I have used Zebra mildliners almost exclusively since I started Bible journaling and I only JUST switched over to these Pen + Gear retractable highlighters from Walmart . The switch was made only because I was getting bored with the same colors and wanted to go back to some regular highlighter colors. I also found myself getting too caught up with the colors matching (more on this in another post) so I decided to get as basic as possible and buy some standard colors. Most highlighters will leave some sort of shadow on the other side of the page, but I don’t find I notice it much once I’ve journaled on the other side.

Many people love gel highlighters like these from Mr. Pen. The formula of gel highlighters makes bleeding to the other side of the page virtually impossible. I have these and they are great quality, I just don’t prefer the gel highlighter medium because I like a more precise highlight.

Bible tabs

In my previous Bible, I used tabs from Be Still Bible Journal on etsy. She has some amazing designs and I love them!

Note paper

This is complicated, so I hope you’re ready, but I use regular sticky notes and, many times, I cut the sticky part off and use washi to stick it into my Bible. Groundbreaking, right? There’s a couple of reasons why I do this, but I’ll go into more detail about that process in another post!

Washi

I use washi tape only to stick notes in my Bible. I LOVE these from Amazon!

If you ever want to look back at these Bible study supplies, I have an Amazon storefront dedicated to my favorite supplies that I’m constantly updating and adding to as I find new things.

Final Thoughts

“…if you go into it without the pursuit of Christ in your heart, it doesn’t matter what supplies you use because your study will be fruitless.”

Again, it’s so important to remember that Bible journaling and studying your Bible intently starts in your heart, not your desk. Come to the Lord in humility and thanksgiving, then get into his word. You don’t have to have an arsenal of stationary. In fact, if you go into it without the pursuit of Christ in your heart, it doesn’t matter what supplies you use because your study will be fruitless. The most important thing to have is a heart willing to learn.
